4 Things To Look For When Renting With Pets

BY ALANA MORGAN
Renting with pets comes with a particular set of challenges. First, you’ve got to find apartments that accept pets, then double check they’ll welcome your pet, as some places only accept certain species, breeds, or sizes.
While
renting with pets
can sometimes be frustrating, some pet-friendly apartments go above and beyond when it comes to catering to animal companions.
Here are four things to look for when searching for the perfect apartment that you’re renting with pets. (Bonus: you can find them all at or near Sentral communities.)

1. A PET-FRIENDLY APARTMENT COMMUNITY

A “Pup Cream Social” at Sentral Union Station’s pet-friendly apartments in Denver.
It’s one thing to find a pet-friendly apartment, it’s another to find a place that your beloved animals can truly call home. Having a place where dogs can socialize with each other means they’ll get more exercise and better behavior. Not to mention the interaction between owners: Anyone with a pet knows that they’re an excellent ice breaker.
Sentral makes it easy to socialize with humans while renting with pets. Dogs are an especially active part of all Sentral communities. Our experience teams regularly host fun dog-friendly events, like “Puppaccino Day” at
Sentral Michigan Avenue
in Chicago and “Yappy Hour” at
Sentral Wynwood
in Miami, where pups can enjoy a special treat. Denver’s
Sentral Union Station
is known for its “Pup Cream Socials,” where both dogs and their owners can mingle and make friends (often with a beverage or two).
Truly pet-friendly communities offer little touches to make those renting with pets feel more welcome — like the free dog treats on offer in many Sentral lobbies. Sentral’s community app, Cobu, also helps residents connect over shared interests; pet lovers often use it to set up walking groups, find sitters, and plan their own gatherings (pet costume contest, anyone?).

2. CONVENIENT PET RELIEF AREAS

The trade-off of having a dog is that you need to take them out… often. And unlike in a house, you can’t just install a doggie door and let Bella have free reign of the backyard. When staying or renting with pets in an apartment building, you don’t want to have to travel far for a place where your pup can relieve itself (especially when it’s raining or in the middle of the night). Thoughtfully designed pet-friendly apartments make the sometimes burdensome task easier with convenient, accessible areas for Rocco to do his business without having to trek out on the city streets.
Sentral communities have many options to assist, including well-kept relief areas, dog runs, and locations in walkable neighborhoods — so Fido can do his thing quickly.

3. ONSITE DOG WASHES AND GROOMING STATIONS

Dog spas and grooming stations make renting with pets much tidier.
Renting with pets is fun — until Max comes home muddy from a walk in the park. Or you come home from a
trip with your dog
and he still smells like the trail. Who wants to get wet and dirty cleaning them off? And sure, groomers are an option, but those bills add up quickly. So if you’re renting with pets, look for dog-friendly apartments with onsite dog washes, where you can give Daisy a much-needed bath without messing up your pristine bathroom.
Several Sentral communities feature “dog spas” where you can hose Hoagie down. The washrooms at
Sentral East Austin
, Sentral
West Midtown Star Metals
in Atlanta,
Sentral SoBro
in Nashville, and
Sentral Old Town in Scottsdale
come complete with wet washing and dry grooming areas.

4. NEARBY DOG PARKS

Renting with pets is a lot less stressful when there are wide open spaces.
When you’re renting with a pet, it’s nice to have an apartment community with dog-friendly amenities, like a dog run or relief area, on site. But it’s even better if it’s close to areas where dogs have even more space to roam. Even in the most spacious apartments, many dogs need access to the great outdoors…even if you’re in the center of a city. Sentral communities are located in some of the country’s most
dog-friendly cities
, which means residents who are renting with pets are spoiled for choice, thanks to nearby parks, public areas, even cafes and bars.
In Seattle, for example, residents at
Sentral First Hill
and
Sentral SLU
are just a short drive away from the city’s
best dog parks
, including the sprawling nine-acre off-leash area at Magnuson Park, which even boasts water access to Lake Washington.
Some of Sentral locations in denser cities have even more dedicated dog spaces, like a large off-leash dog park on the rooftop of
Sentral DTLA
, and dog play areas at Sentral Michigan Avenue, Sentral West Midtown Star Metals, and Sentral Union Station.

Of course, being a pet owner comes with responsibilities, and renting with pets means meeting the requirements of your apartment community. At Sentral, the rules on size limitations, types of pets, and other factors vary from community to community, but in general pet owners will need to pay a fee and provide vaccination records. For more information, reach out to the leasing office at the
Sentral community
where you’re interested in renting with pets.
