New Year, Fresh Start: Health and Wellness Tips

BY HEATHER MIKESELL
While the past 22 months have been filled with their fair share of challenges and uncertainty, 2022 offers a chance to start anew. This year, instead of making resolutions, consider setting intentions instead. Intentions help bring about a shift in mindset — a kinder and more compassionate way to make the health and wellness changes you desire.
Here are a few easy intentions you can set to make the year ahead your healthiest and most balanced yet. While you can incorporate the suggestions below wherever you are, some are even easier to implement while
living at a Sentral community
. Read on to see why!

CHALLENGE YOURSELF WITH A NEW WORKOUT

It’s easy to fall into a rut when it comes to working out. The trick is to keep things interesting. Access to a variety of equipment, classes, and locations helps. At Sentral, in addition to state-of-the-art equipment from Peloton, TRX, LifeFitness, and Nautilus, you’ll benefit from ever-changing fitness classes and pop-ups. At Sentral DTLA, for example, local personal trainers often lead classes and outdoor training sessions for residents. This spring, Sentral Austin residents can enjoy a complimentary three-month yoga series with local yogi
Lizzie Aguirre
, known for her creative sequencing. The bottom line: Look for opportunities to get out of your comfort zone and embrace a new workout.

FOCUS ON MINDFUL AND INTUITIVE EATING

In our digitally connected world, eating is often considered an afterthought or something we do when we’re bored, restless, or escaping a bad mood. Instead of zoning out, try eating more mindfully by unplugging from your phone and paying attention to the tastes and textures of the food in front of you. Listen to your body’s cues to determine when you’re full. Setting an intention to eat without distractions whenever possible can help you eat more healthfully, put you back in touch with your body, and reignite the joy that comes with a delicious meal.

INCORPORATE BREATHWORK INTO YOUR WELLNESS ROUTINE

Taking a moment to focus on your breath can result in a range of benefits. Photo by James Baigrie.
Breathing is something most of us take for granted, however, very few of us know how to do it properly. As a result, we’ve become a nation of mouth breathers, which can create sleep and health issues, including snoring, sleep apnea, dental decay, and more. It’s no surprise breathwork is trending. By inhaling deeply and focusing on your breath, perhaps with a
pranayama breathing
class or meditation, you can transform your body’s biochemistry, increasing oxygen in the blood while reducing stress, anxiety, and even chronic pain. It can be as simple as devoting five minutes or so a day to conscious breathwork. (Need somewhere quiet to go? Many Sentral communities feature roof decks, which provide the perfect backdrop to simply sit and breathe.)

SCHEDULE MIDDAY WORKOUTS TO BOOST ENERGY

One of the advantages of working from home is the flexibility to work out when you want. If you’re familiar with the afternoon slump, consider adding a midday workout to your schedule. An energizing session will help bolster memory, thinking skills, and the ability to focus — meaning you’ll be more productive for the rest of the day.
Research
also shows that mid-afternoon sweat sessions can be more effective, thanks to an increase in caloric burn in the late afternoon. And with Sentral’s on-site fitness center just steps away, it’s easy to find the time.
Even a healthy walk around the neighborhood after lunch can help reduce stress, improve digestion, manage blood sugar levels, and combat the negative effects of sitting all day. Fortunately, Sentral communities are located in walkable sections of some of
the world's least stressful cities
, including
Seattle
,
Chicago
,
Miami
, and — believe it or not —
Los Angeles
.

GET MORE SLEEP

One of the most important things you can do for your health is to boost the quality and quantity of sleep you get each night. Doing so can help enhance memory, improve immunity, lower blood pressure, prevent weight gain, and promote a more positive mindset.
Be intentional about how you prepare for bed each night by establishing a sleep schedule; avoiding exposure to any light-emitting screens approximately one to two hours before turning in; limiting sugary snacks and heavy meals close to bedtime; and keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and quiet. Using a sleep mask, like the one gifted to each Sentral resident upon move-in, blocks out light that may disrupt your biological clock. Listening to a guided meditation or incorporating breathwork will help the body and mind relax.
By prioritizing these simple self-care steps, you can set yourself up for success, ensuring a happier and healthier year ahead.
